Integral to our culture is the belief that “Team comes first.” And looking after our staff, affectionately known as “Pirates,” includes looking after the community that their families inhabit and their children will inherit.
We pledge up to HKD 2 million annually in corporate giving through a combination of donations from fundraisers, food drives, prize contributions for charity auctions, sponsorship for charity runs, and more.
Since 2021, our popular annual costumed race, Pici Pasta Run, has been donating all its proceeds to Mind HK’s Mental Health Restaurant Week, toward enhancing accessibility to free community-based mental health services for people in need.
We are also an annual sponsor of Weez Walk, Kely’s largest fundraiser for critical suicide prevention programmes and creating broader awareness around youth mental wellbeing.
Working with locally registered charities serving vulnerable, marginalised and needy people in Hong Kong, we support other organisations such as Mother’s Choice, Impact HK, Branches of Hope, and many other notable non-profits.
As a homegrown Hong Kong hospitality group, we acknowledge our role in looking after our fellow Hongkongers and of our common home. From humble beginnings with our Italian flagship and namesake restaurant, Pirata, to now 26 restaurants strong, serving 1.5 million guests annually, we are deeply aware and mindful of our footprint.
From harnessing the power of partnerships to supporting those who already are doing wonderful things, we’re committed to making a positive impact on our local community and environment.
From Local to Global
We’re delighted to be partnered with Belu, a drinks business and social enterprise that gives 100% of its net profit to WaterAid to help transform lives worldwide with clean water.
Belu filtered still and sparkling water is now available on tap in Pirata, Chaiwala, Calle Ocho, TokyoLima, The Optimist, TMK Rap + Rolls, TMK Funk and Honjokko, with more restaurants to be added soon. This partnership is a testament to our dedication to making a positive impact beyond our local footprint.
“We’re committed to becoming a more socially involved and environmentally sustainable company,” Group COO, Roberto Garrone, shares. “And while we’re still in the early stages of this journey, we’re actively working to develop innovative solutions which we hope will have a meaningful impact, not just locally, but globally.”
This partnership has enabled our restaurants to switch from single-use imported water bottles, reducing waste and lowering carbon emissions, while still providing guests with premium-quality, great-tasting water that also delivers revenue benefits.
“We’re delighted to be joining forces with Pirata Group to bring more sustainable options to diners in Hong Kong,” said Claire Pearson, Global Growth Director at Belu. “This collaboration aligns perfectly with Belu’s mission to ‘change the way the world sees water’ and has a positive impact on communities worldwide through our partnership with WaterAid. By working together, we can make significant strides towards a more environmentally-conscious future, while continuing to deliver the exceptional dining experiences Pirata Group is known for.”
Since November 2023, Calle Ocho and Chaiwala have saved 19,548 bottles, preventing 77 tonnes of CO2e emissions in total by switching to Belu Filter in Action. This is nearly equivalent to the emissions from 19 return flights between London and Hong Kong.
Furthermore, every 3 Belu refills save over 15kg of CO2 emissions and prevent 3 single-use glass bottles from going to waste. By the time reaching 500 refills, the group is saving an amount of CO2 equivalent to a flight from Hong Kong to the UK.
This partnership is just one example of our growing efforts toward sustainability, in addition to various eco-friendly initiatives across our operations.
Pici and The Pizza Project, which all together consist of 11 restaurants and two cloud kitchens, use FSC-certified sustainable packaging for delivery and takeaway boxes and utensils.
La Favorita, Tempo Tempo, Honjokko, TMK Funk & Rolls and Pici Taikoo Place are also participants of the Green Kitchen Initiative by Swire Properties, optimising sustainability performances in their kitchen operations.
As a homegrown hospitality group that continues to grow, we aim to apply more related measures to maximise our contributions toward green living.
